Types of Non-Destructive Testing

The tensile-strength test is inherently fruitless; in the process of collecting material, the sample is destroyed. Although this is not a problem when a safe supply of the sample material is at hand, nondestructive tests are better for materials that are dear or arduous to create or that have been formed into completed or semicompleted samples.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive process, used to find surface marks and weaknesses in samples, uses a penetrating fluid, either visibly coloured or fluorescent. After being painted on the surface of the sample material and allowed to fill into any small cracks, the liquid is cleared, leaving readily revealed markings and flaws. Another such method, used for nonmetals, takes an electrically charged fluid painted on the material surface. After the extra liquid is cleared off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the nonmetal and draws to the cracks. Neither of these processes, however, can identify internal imperfections.

Radiation

Internal, like external weaknesses, can be located by X-ray or gamma-ray tests in which the radiation passes through the metal and impresses on an ideal photographic film. On some occasions, it is possible to focus the X rays toward a particular plane within the piece, permitting a 3-dimensional view of the flaw identity along with its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of sections requires transmission of sound waves above human hearing range through the material. Under the reflection technique, a sound wave is sent from one area of the material, reflected with the other area, and signalled into a receiver situated at the beginning side.
