Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many company brands and models available, it can be difficult for customers to decide between both technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting the same standard of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your room covering your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. And such is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel functions like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as pros like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the point when the projector turns on to when the image reaches your screen is extremely significant to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by cutting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels make the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to create the projector image. A significant point to know about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projector screen all at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even how an image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to projecting an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then put together each coloured element of the image into a complete image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to offer the top level of brightness and spectacular colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP designers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this further detracts from colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better quality. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications in comparison to a majority of LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be a plus, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is utilised. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to project has moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most common artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is unavoidable in DLP systems because moving images change up between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this disadvantage because every colour is sent simultaneously. Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in a different way. Usually with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will come up above and an extra blue will be projected below something as simple as a straight black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adjusted to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is projected on separate LCD panels.

Racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his return to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), ordered for more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be fashionable among the wealthy and royalty, but after that time the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when joining with other clubs, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was first seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland instigated the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it was named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht organisation had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent – the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight – the perpetual setting of British yacht racing. The society at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the ascension of George IV. All members were required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bids were held, and the social life was splendid. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English gained control. Sailing was mostly for pleasure and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a benchmark of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was first largely impacted by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a syndicate headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. The first yachts were not designed and crafted in today’s sense, with merely a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what such study had done earlier for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats were individually custom-built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, adopted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest flourishing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to the same specifications in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be done on an even par with no handicapping required. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting belonged primarily for the royal and the rich, cost was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and preference of smaller craft happened in the latter half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the hardiness of small yachts. Later in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to replace sail power in public craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in personal boats. Sizeable power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance sailing was a favourite activity of the well off. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave rise to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries with both sail and power were the yacht standard for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of large steam yachts. Notably of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many large boats were using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. In the decade following, bigger power-yacht building flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The construction of larger power craft lessened in 1932, and the fashion after that was in preference of smaller, less pricey boats. Following World War II, many small naval craft were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally manning and upkeeping their own small recreational yachts. The amount of craft and owners increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas along the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that puts the same relative onus on all the taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income increase in relative scale. A progressive tax is characterizable by a greater than proportional growth in the tax onus in relation to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the related onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are regarded as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, but regressive taxes can have the effect of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, may become less so in the upper-income class—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by nominating deductions or by removing certain income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics would also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year does not definitely offer the best measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory growth in income may be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer could select to finance consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared along with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good lowers as the amount of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), calculated as a standard amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not simple to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of a lack of certainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden is dependant for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In regarding the economic purposes of taxation, it is essential to distinguish between various concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are those nominated in legislature; commonly these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates signify the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Since marginal rates indicate how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to realise the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, because it may depend on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem determines that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is in consideration for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and due to that marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received mostly by high-income households may dwarf these effects, producing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that decline as income increases.
